How to Play Omaha Poker, Rules and Strategy
Omaha poker is a game that is played between two to ten players. Players have to win as many chips as possible from their opponents. When playing this game, players can win pot in two different ways.
- All other players playing the game fold their cards, declaring you as the winner.
- You should hold best 5-card hand when showdown.
The game can shutdown only after all players decide to fold or if a single player wins all chips from each of the player. If any player wishes to continue then he or she can re-buy chips.
Omaha Poker game is played in three simple rounds.
- Set up
- Betting round
- Final showdown
1 ) Omaha Poker Set up – when all players are present at the table then the game can be played. Initially you have to draw a card of high value for the dealer. Each player is dealt with single face-up card. The player having highest value card is declared as the dealer. In case two players are having same high value card then they are either dealt with another card or the value of the suits determines the winner.
- Poker suits from best to worst are – Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs.
The dealer shuffles the cards and deals the hands to the players. Players are asked to place their blinds before the cards are dealt. The first player places small blind and the one next to him places big blind. The dealer then deals one card to each of the player in clockwise direction till all players have four cards each.
2) Omaha Poker Betting Round – When playing Omaha poker, betting round can end only if both conditions are met:
- Each and every player gets a chance to play.
- Each of the players has placed the same amount of bet.
Players generally have three different options in this game:-
- Fold – Players are allowed to throw away their card in the muck without placing their bets.
- Call – They place the bet equivalent to Big blind.
- Raise – They can double the amount of bet placed. This generally depends on the type of game play.
The action in the game proceeds in the clockwise direction and each of the players playing the game has all three above mentioned options. In case any player chooses to raise then the next player will have to place the full amount of Big blind and raised amount. The moment the players get back to small blind they can either fold or raise again.
Flop in Omaha Poker – After preflop round, players are dealt with flop. These are the first three cards dealt to the player from the set of five. Single card is facing down which is also termed as burn, and rest three cards are face up. In this round, any player who is playing is termed as ‘Live player’. He has an option to place his bet or check.
The Turn in Omaha Poker– After flop, the dealer deals with ‘turn’. The dealer deals each player with single face down card, and another card face up. Players can then begin with their betting round. When placing bets in this round, players are having large betting limits, which is twice the big blind.
River in Omaha Poker– After turn round the players are dealt with final card which is face down, followed by another card that is face up. After this, players have to place their final bet.
3) Shutdown in Omaha Poker – Any player who is playing the game can enter this final round. Here the player who is having best hand is declared as the winner of the round.
